History and transformation of Plagwitz
In the 19th century Plagwitz was the industrial heart of Saxony. Enormous factory buildings sprang up along the Karl-Heine-Kanal – textile factories, machine manufacturers, chemical plants. After reunification in 1989 many buildings fell into disrepair. But then came the creatives: artists rented cheap studios in old factory buildings, gallery owners opened exhibition spaces, cafés and bars moved in. The Baumwollspinnerei – once Europe's largest cotton factory – became the symbol of this transformation.
Today Plagwitz is one of Leipzig's most sought-after districts. Property prices and rents have risen sharply, but the original charm has remained – a mix of industrial character, creativity and urban lifestyle.
What makes Plagwitz so special
- Baumwollspinnerei: Europe's largest art centre in a former factory – over 100 galleries, studios, cafés and event spaces. Every first Saturday of the month: open studio tour.
- Karl-Heine-Straße: The district's main artery, lined with restaurants, bars, boutiques and cafés. Pulsating nightlife in the evenings, relaxed café culture during the day.
- Karl-Heine-Kanal: The historic industrial canal now serves as a green promenade with towpaths, boat hire and beer gardens in summer.
- Lindenauer Hafen: Adjacent to Plagwitz – in summer one of Leipzig's most popular gathering spots with outdoor bars, food trucks and cultural events.
- Westwerk: Concerts, theatre, readings and cultural festivals in a former factory hall.
